Seven Corporal Works of Mercy and Seven Deadly Sins in Czech Medieval Arts
Eichlerová, Eliška ; Vymazalová, Marie (advisor) ; Royt, Jan (referee)
The bachelor's thesis will deal with the theme of the seven-corporal works of mercy and the seven deadly sins in Czech fine art. These opposing themes develop primarily in a middle-class environment, where they were supposed to appeal to the moral life of the middle-class people. The first part of this thesis will discuss the development of the doctrine of the seven deadly sins in the Middle Ages. The variability of approaches to the seven sins will also be revealed by a comparison with the development of the doctrine of the virtues, where it is also possible to show the starting points for the formation of the medieval teaching on the seven-corporal works of mercy. The second part deals with the analysis of individual sins and acts of mercy, their meaning, and the way they are depicted. In the third part, I will also focus on individual examples of the depiction of this iconography in European art, and we will mention a few important works, especially from the High and Late Middle Ages. Following on from European art, the last chapters will focus on individual examples of the seven-corporal works of mercy and the seven deadly sins in the Czech environment, especially in the book painting and monumental mural.

Hejdová, Tereza ; Andrlová Fidlerová, Alena (advisor) ; Škarpová, Marie (referee)
The work The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature tries to map different ways of description of this Czech preacher in selected literary texts from 15th to 18th century, to capture the changes which his image underwent. The chosen authors come from different countries and use different languages, represent different environments, social classes and opinion groups, they also have different education and religion. Individual literary works were assessedby means of comparing the key episodes that are either repeated in the texts, or the author intentionally did not use them. To understand the image of Jan Hus as a whole, also contemporary iconography was taken into account , which in some cases has been taken from other literary texts than those which were compared, so that the image of Hus whereas complete as possible. The comparison of the texts and iconography showed, how accurate the observation of the described scheme was and how the image of Jan Hus was gradually changing. The combination of written and iconographic material from specific time intervals allowed us to observe the gradual change of conceptions of the personality of Jan Hus and events connected with him, because the authors represent the opinion of their ethnic group and time. The image of Jan Hus is therefore very...

Kubištová, Mariana ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Schlosser Trnková, Petra (referee) ; Pospěch, Tomáš (referee)
Mariana Kubištová CZECH ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE 1920s TO THE 1950s Abstract The thesis Czech Architectural Photography in the 1920s to the 1950s presents the theme of architecture photography, from the 1920's to the 1950's, focusing on Czech cultural setting, observing photography meeting contemporary acts in the field of architecture, thus the photography of modern architecture. It methodologically researches the theme from a visual study viewpoint; however it applies a little more traditional approaches, which try to define architecture photography depending on functions it carries out; to demarcate its various categories, describe its history and name some of its important representatives. Each of these approaches is able to capture a different aspect of the observed theme. The first part of the thesis attempts to answer what architecture photography is, what we can qualify as architecture photography and how we can approach and interpret it. It summarizes research and knowledge of this field up till now, not just within Czech cultural setting but also abroad. Last but not least, it tries to outline historical, social and artistic context of the researched era. The second part counts with the presumption that the core and the biggest volume of visual material lies in the field of professional...
The Paradise - graphic cycle by J. E. Ridinger. Iconography and context.
TUHÁČEK, Jan
Johann Elias Ridinger, an Augsburg graphic artist, painter, and publisher, has done more than 1200 graphic artworks during his lifetime. In the late 1740s, he created a twelve-part graphic cycle The Paradise, in which he depicted tens of different animals alongside the figures of Adam and Eve. The primary part of this bachelor thesis outlines the development of this theme in art history and presents the number of renaissance and baroque artworks. It also deals with a traditional Christian and moralist symbolism of animals, and then this gained knowledge can be applied to the Ridinger's series. The main goal of this thesis is to present the meanings of animals, to put them in the context of the creation of man, his original sin, and his expulsion from the garden of Eden, and together with it to use these principles on the individual leaves of the cycle. Another task is to introduce this artwork in terms of graphic technology and preserved preparatory works. The task of the last chapter is to complete the idea in its entirety by placing the cycle in the author's overall work, implying the question of the customers, and briefly discussing the successors to the theme of original sin.

The first part is devoted to the life and legend of St. Francis, which is the basis for the subsequent processing of individual images. An integral part of the work is also the topic of the origin and development of the begging orders that caused the depiction of St. Francis. Specifically, Franciscans, Minorites and Capuchins. An important chapter is also the piety of the Czech lands in the Baroque period, which demonstrates the revival of the veneration of St. Francis during the 17th and 18th centuries in Bohemia. All the above-mentioned parts provide the basis for the following chapters on specific illustrations. The iconography of the individual scenes is first described in a general depiction, including the world's most important examples. A large part of the work is devoted to individual works associated with the Czech environment. The most represented depictions are Stigmatization of St. Francis, Ecstasy, The Porciunculus Miracle or his Death. Last but not least, the work will focus on the monastery lunette cycles...
Depiction of Apollo on Baroque Ceiling Painting
Ungrová, Eva ; Oulíková, Petra (advisor) ; Vymazalová, Marie (referee)
The Depiction of Apollo on Baroque murals The theme of the diploma thesis is the depiction of Apollo in Baroque frescoes. The figure of the antique God of Sun appears in our country most often in Baroque residences in several different themes. Apollo with his sun chariot is closely connected with the solar theme - due to its location in space, it refers us to the daily cyclicality. Apollo with his sun chariot, same as Aurora symbolizes an allegory of the arrival of a new day. We most often find this theme in halls and staircases, but also in Sala terrena. Specific examples can be seen, for example, in Náměšť nad Oslavou, where Apollo announces a new day, or in Slavkov u Brna where we find several paintings connected with daily cyclicality, and in the Sale terrain in Děčín as an example of outdoor decoration. Some rulers also identified with the god Apollo, so his figure is also present in some frescoes celebrating his client. We meet such an example in the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague or in the Hall of the Ancestors of the chateau in Vranov nad Dyjí. Apollo with the Muses presents a celebration of art. In our country, for example, at the chateau Nové Město nad Metují, but also in the Prague Klementinum in a baroque library hall, where Apollo is on a side fresco on Mount Parnassus. Apollo often...
